The only Professor of Sign Language and Deaf Studies in the United Kingdom; Senior Professor at the Deafness, Cognition and Language Research Centre, UCL. Over 30 years experience in the field of linguistics, sign language and deaf studies, and co- author/editor of several major books in the field: ‘The linguistics of BSL’, ‘Sign language: the study of deaf people and their language’, ‘Research Methods in Sign Linguistics’, ‘Sign Language: an International Handbook’, ‘Sign Language Acquisition’.
Specific areas of expertise include:
Language development in deaf children and adults: atypical signers (those with developmental or acquired impairments); literacy skills and intellectual capacity of deaf people; communication between hearing and deaf people; sign language interpreting. Assessment and preparation of reports on the above issues.
