Dr. Gary Edward Bywater has a PhD in high temperature metal matrix alloys and 12 years of industrial experience across automotive (road vehicles and Formula 1), aluminium, refractory ceramic, the carburising heat treatment of large (≤ 20 Ton) steel gears for defence, and consultancy.
At the heart of his experience is having worked within manufacturing quality and problem resolution, this has afforded skills of identifying and solving material issues for critical engineering applications, which in many instances had significant financial stakes.
Internally within ESR Technology Ltd, he provides materials support to the ESR Space department for components used in satellites and spacecraft.
Topics are: materials and metallurgical engineering, root cause failure analysis (RCFA), heat treatment, advanced material characterisation, material selection, mechanical testing, corrosion, degradation assessment, molten metal corrosion of ceramics.
Defect analysis, aluminium metal cleanliness assessment (PoDFA/Prefil), inclusion analysis, billet homogenisation, manufacturing quality improvement, non-conformance assessment, and material certification review.
