Working with computers for more than 45 years. Examining and reporting on evidence from computers for more than 15 years.
I focus on criminal work and I have looked at evidence in more than 250 cases. My long experience includes identifying and explaining strengths and weaknesses in police evidence.
I often suggest that my initial task should be to prepare a letter that describes the evidence so that a solicitor, their client and I have a common understanding of what the client is alleged to have done.
This common understanding enables decisions about next steps that might include preparation of a formal report describing gaps in evidence or examination of devices to clarify details.
I use simple and clear language in my reports and minimise use of technical jargon. I estimate that more than 15% of prosecutions are dropped when the CPS receive a formal report describing the computer evidence.
I have prepared reports in cases that include:
Rape.
Terrorism.
Indecent images of children, extreme and prohibited images.
Breaches of SOPO and SHPO.
False accounting.
Forgery of motor vehicle documents.
I estimate that I have given spoken evidence on more than 30 occasions. I am a Chartered IT Professional, Member of the British Computer Society and Member of the Academy of Experts.
