I am an experienced Consultant Intensivist, commended by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine for sustained contribution to the speciality.
Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, University of Southampton and Visiting Research Fellow, Dickson Poon School of Law, Kings College London.
I have over 30 years’ experience as a doctor. I trained in general internal medicine, Microbiology / virology and anaesthesia before switching to intensive care medicine.
In 2002 I was appointed as consultant intensive physician, at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. I moved to University Hospital Southampton in December 2020.
I have academic roles at the University of Southampton, Kings College London and the University of Reading.
I have been awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine for exceptional services to the science and practice of Forensic and Legal Medicine.
I have been Honorary Secretary of the Intensive Care Society, founded and Chaired the Legal and Ethical Policy Unit of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and been a member of national guideline development groups in a number of key areas, including Prolonged Disorders of Consciousness.
Regularly instructed by public bodies, including the Official Solicitor.

Cardiac arrest – Ventricular fibrillation (VF), Asystole, Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA).
Trauma.
Neurocritical care including neuroprotection, delayed cerebral ischaemia (DCI) spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) including ICU follow up, Life after critical illness, survival after recovery from critical illness.
Scoring systems including SOFA, APACHE, SAPS, Sepsis6.
Organ monitoring and organ support in critical illness including haemodynamic monitoring (LidCO, PiCCO, doppler), mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy.
