Dr Ronan O’Leary is a Consultant in Intensive Care and Anaesthesia, appointed to Cambridge University Hospitals in 2013. His primary clinical focus is on Neurosciences and Trauma Critical Care and Anaesthesia. He accepts instructions in the following areas:
– Critical care, major trauma, disorders of consciousness, and coronial inquests
– Anaesthesia and perioperative care
– Electronic patient records, data standards, and digital transformation in healthcare
Dr O’Leary’s medicolegal expertise encompasses prolonged disorders of consciousness, complex trauma, emergency and elective anaesthesia, and healthcare systems – particularly trauma networks.
His Court of Protection experience includes a case he led (as ‘Doctor A’) involving a serious medical treatment decision for a patient with a prolonged disorder of consciousness due to neurological complications of COVID-19 ([2021] EWCOP 51), in which Mr Justice Hayden described his evidence as “extremely impressive.”
He also has extensive experience in electronic patient records, digital governance, and clinical informatics.
He directed the Cambridge Healthcare Data Programme and has contributed to national initiatives on data-driven approaches to healthcare delivery.
