Alan is a Clinical Associate Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
Alan Norrish has broad and substantial expertise in trauma, orthopaedics and sports medicine, built over more than three decades of study, clinical practice, teaching and research.
His principal clinical focus is complex lower limb trauma and reconstruction, including periprosthetic fractures of the hip and knee, distal femoral fractures, tibial plateau injuries, distal tibial pilon fractures, fracture non-union, malunion and post-traumatic infection.
He has extensive experience in general acute orthopaedic trauma affecting both upper and lower limbs, from clavicle, humeral, forearm, hand and wrist fractures to hip, femoral, tibial, ankle and foot injuries.
He is also experienced in the use of Ilizarov and Taylor Spatial Frames for complex tibial reconstruction, as well as mega-prosthesis surgery, amputation, hip arthroplasty and the management of complications following primary and revision hip and knee replacement.
A further area of specialist expertise is bone and joint infection, including osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and prosthetic joint infection.
Alongside his trauma and reconstruction practice, he has developed expertise in sports and exercise medicine, including knee soft-tissue injuries, ACL and meniscal pathology, patellar instability, Achilles tendon rupture, muscle injuries and contact sport-related conditions.
His academic and educational expertise includes postgraduate course leadership, curriculum design, professional practice and fitness-to-practise work, international nurse and surgical education, and examining for the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.
This clinical breadth is supported by a substantial research profile, international lecturing experience and senior roles within medical education across undergraduate, postgraduate and multidisciplinary healthcare training environments nationally and internationally.
