A healthcare, occupational, environmental bacteriologist/microbiologist with over 45 years’ experience in the NHS and University Medical Schools, and in the private sector. I have extensive research and teaching experience in the UK and elsewhere.

I am additionally a lecturer at the University of West London, teaching microbiology and infection prevention and control at all levels. My research-driven practice focuses on healthcare and environmental microbiology, hygiene, infection prevention and control, and occupational biohazards. I have particular expertise in post-surgical and device-related infections, in hygiene and related deficiencies affecting the wider hospital environment. and in bio-safety with an emphasis on worker hygiene.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, The Royal Society for Public Health, of The Institute of Biomedical Science. I am a member of the Healthcare Infection Society, the Infection Prevention Society, the British Infection Association, the Microbiology Society, the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID), and of the Royal Society of Medicine. I am a Chartered Biologist and Chartered Scientist.

I was a specialist adviser in microbiology to both the Healthcare Commission and the Care Quality Commission. I was founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Hospital Environment & Hygiene Management. Currently, I sit on the editorial board of the Journal of Hospital Infection and previously sat on the editorial boards of The Biologist and The Journal of Infection Prevention. In addition, I have been a regular reviewer for many medical and scientific journals for over 3 decades.

I have more than 30 years’ experience as an Expert Witness. I received Expert Witness training first at The Royal Postgraduate Medical School and later at Imperial College London. I hold the certificate of completion of the Bond Solon Civil Procedure Rules for Expert Witnesses course, and the Cardiff University Law School/Bond Solon Civil Expert Witness certificate. I have completed the Bond Solon Expert Witness 2019 and 2020 update training courses.

I have appeared in Crown, County and High Courts, in the Coronial Court, in Arbitrations, and in Tribunals. I have acted in Planning and related environmental permitting applications, hearings and appeals, in medicines regulatory hearings, in Public Inquiry, and by invitation as an Expert Witness in Courts in Gibraltar, The Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, US, Japan, in two notable discrimination cases in Sweden having their foundation in matters of hygiene and microbiology, and most recently in Bermuda.

I receive instruction and have appeared in crown, county and high court cases, in the coronial court, public inquiry, and in arbitrations. I have also appeared in planning and permitting applications and appeals. I have received additional instruction in Eire, Sweden, Holland and Gibraltar. I hold the certificate of completion of the Bond Solon Civil Procedure Rules for Expert Witnesses course, and the Cardiff University Law School and Bond Solon Civil Expert Witness certificate.
